While Thanksgiving and Black Friday and Cyber Monday get all the accolades this week (as of the time of this writing), there’s a day this week that’s more special than any other – Black Wednesday.
What’s Black Wednesday, you ask? Of course it’s the night before Thanksgiving, call it “Thanksgiving Eve”, and is the biggest drinking night of the year. Ask any bar, they’ll tell you it’s one of their highest grossing nights of the year. Here’s a few reasons why that is so.
Why is Thanksgiving Eve Such a Big Drinking Night?
You Don’t Work the Next Day
Unless you work in certain industries, nearly everyone has Thanksgiving Day off from work and are free to go out and tip a few drinks back. It’s a holiday for all of the U.S. – no religious context, no specific culture — it’s for all of us Americans and we’re giving the opportunity to let loose for some mid-week drinking. It’s like a weekend on a Wednesday!
You’ll Be Entertaining the Next Day
Everything is gearing up for the big day on Thursday. Whether you’re hosting it at your place or you’re going to relatives (or to some friends’ for a “Friendsgiving”) or trying to win over your girlfriend’s parents, it can be a long, stressful day with preparing dishes, keeping up conversation, and everything that has to do with the get-together. With all the work that is to be done on early Thursday, take the time to unwind on Wednesday night and enjoy yourself.
Everyone is Home
You’re either staying around your place, or you’re traveling back to your hometown (of course, that could be the same place for some of you). Either way, there’s plenty of people around who are similarly looking to have some fun before the storm on Thursday. One of the great things is returning to your hometown and running into old friends you grew up with. Of course, that can be a bad thing, too! Either way, it’s an opportunity to see familiar faces.
Curing Your Hangover on Thanksgiving
There are few things worse than a hangover. Thanksgiving Eve is a great night to drink to excess as you have a built-in hangover cure the next day with a big meal. All that gravy and other greasy food and all the drinks you’ll be tilting back with your family, you’ll be drunk again in no time and filling your belly to wash away your aches from the night before.
So there you have it, all the reasons why Thanksgiving Eve is the greatest night of the year when it comes to drinking. How about you? Are you going out with friends on Blackout Wednesday? And if you’re single, what better night when there are tons of people out at the bar and perhaps you’ll find a woman that is into you and may keep you warm through the holidays? Get out there and enjoy yourself this year and make some memories (or have a night that you can’t remember!).
